The No-Confidence motion
A group of Joint Opposition Parliamentarians including Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was hand over to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya on the 16th of March.
Excluding former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, 55 Members of Parliament have signed the No Confidence motion
SLFP members requested PM Ranil Wickramasinghe to resign before the voting day.
The No Confidence motion against the PM Ranil Wickramasinghe contains 14 points.
- Bringing the Central Bank under his purview with the intention defrauding the bank by committing the bond scam.
- Violating the nations law by appointing Arjun Mahendran, who was not a citizen of Sri Lanka as the Governor of the Central Bank.
- Being a co-conspirator of the bond scam.
- Attempting to derail legal proceedings against the chief suspects of the bond scam by appointing the Pitipana Committee which included his political allies.
- Intentionally deceiving Parliament by making an official statement in the House on the 17th of March 2015 in order to protect those involved in the bond scam by hiding real facts.
- Allowing Arjun Mahendran to abscond court orders by leaving the country.
- Failing to take prompt action as the Minister of Law and Order during the recent unrest that erupted in Kandy.
Debate on the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe began and MP Dinesh Gunawardena presented the no-confidence motion a short while ago to Parliament.
The debate continues until 9.30 PM and voting on the motion of no-confidence is scheduled to take place.
68-year-old PM Mr.Ranil Wickramasinghe’s coalition alliance, the United National Front for Good Governance, won the 2015 parliamentary election with 106 seats. Although it fell short of an outright majority, Wickremesinghe was re-elected as Prime Minister with over 35 Sri Lanka Freedom Party members joining his cabinet.
But recent local government election results showed that majority still with former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and it made a dilemma of Sri lankan politics.
The United National Party (UNP) will undergo a major revamp after the no-confidence motion, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday.
