According to the Constitution, the Election Commission of Sri Lanka is authorized to call the presidential election from Wednesday, July 17, 2024.
Opposition political parties and an election monitoring group have requested the Election Commission to announce the nomination date as soon as possible. However, the Commission informed that adequate time is required for preparation for the nomination process and other related tasks.
A senior election official has said that the commission plans to announce the election date and call for nominations by the end of this month.
Last week, Foreign Minister Ali Sabri stated that Sri Lanka’s presidential election is likely to be held on October 5 or 12 this year.
“The presidential election will be held from September 17 to October 17 this year. It is likely to be held on Saturday, October 5 or October 12,” he told Parliament.
The Election Commission says that the voting for the 2024 presidential election will be held between September 17 and October 16.
According to that, the commission states in a notification that the related nominations will be called within the specified period.
