The public debate for the 2024 Presidential Election candidates is set to take place this afternoon (Sep. 07). Organized by the ‘March 12 Movement’, the debate will be broadcast live from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. across major TV channels like ‘TV Derana’ and ‘Ada Derana 24’, and will also stream on over 200 social media platforms, including those of ‘Ada Derana’. This platform will allow the candidates to share their policies with the public.
According to Rohana Hetticarachchi, Executive Director of the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL), four candidates, including Sajith Premadasa (SJB), Namal Rajapaksa (SLPP), Dilith Jayaweera (Sarvajana Balaya), and Tamil common candidate P. Ariyanethiran, have confirmed their attendance.

On Friday (Sep. 06), Mr. Hetticarachchi revealed that other presidential candidates, including Anura Kumara Dissanayake, have also been invited to the debate but have yet to confirm their participation. He stated, “We are still waiting. The leader of the National People’s Power mentioned they are busy with meetings, but the same goes for other candidates. They haven’t confirmed yet.”
He added, “We remain hopeful they will join. However, Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe’s party has informed us in writing that it is difficult for him to participate. Mr. Dissanayake still has the opportunity, and we remain optimistic.”
