Rs. 6000 allowance for all Students in Schools less than 300 students

The Government has decided to extend the school stationery allowance originally granted to “Aswesuma” beneficiaries to a wider group of underprivileged children. The initiative aims to support students from marginalised backgrounds across Sri Lanka, ensuring they have the resources needed for the new school year.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet Media conference, Cabinet Spokesman, Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa explained that the Rs.6,000 allowance initially provided to children from “Aswesuma” beneficiary families will now include students in 6,576 schools with fewer than 300 pupils.

This will also cover children from families that do not qualify for the welfare scheme, those living in Child Development Centers, and both lay and monastic students studying in Pirivenas.

The Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Ministries has been tasked with implementing this initiative, which will also benefit orphaned children, those with disabled parents, and others facing hardship due to special circumstances.  Acknowledging the absence of an up-to-date database to identify these groups, the government has opted to provide the allowance to eligible categories to avoid delays. Dr.Jayatissa stressed the importance of delivering the aid in time for the 2025 school term, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind in their educational journey.
